7/30/2018 Lunenberg and Mahone’s Bay Nova Scotia

I am sure that Sandy will give a final synopsis of our Halifax visit, but wanted to keep you all in the loop.  Today 7/31 we are relaxing and tomorrow we start our move to Cape Breton.

Yesterday we traveled east to Lunenberg and Mahone’s Bay

Lunenberg is a fishing and ship/boat building city.  It is where the bluenose schooner was built to race and beat the fishing schooners of the United States.  The blue nose schooner is actually stamped into the Canadian 10 cent coin.  A replica of the original bluenose schooner was in port but hidden behind other boats and equipment so I didn’t get a good picture of it.  The pictures I have are the one with all the sailing masts.  We did see the $70M yacht “Mylin” being worked on (looked like they were adding a large deck on the back at water level) and a wind sensor being mounted on the top of the mast of a sail boat (See picture of man in a cage hanging from a Crane cable.  Lunenberg although pretty, we blew through it pretty quickly

Mahone’s Bay, also very small, but quaint, with restaurants and of course my favorite, Ice Cream shops.  We like Mahone’s Bay better, but again a couple hours is enough.  By the way, they do have a great dentist office in a 100+ year old building which you know if you read my previous post.

Here are some pictures of the day:

Dentist on the Road

So I never thought I would see the day when we would walk into a 100+ year Dentist office for some dental work.  Well it happened (Picture attached).

I expected to see a black dentist chair with a spit-tune and a Dentist carrying a stone hammer.

Actually, Sandy has been fighting a tooth infection and as we drove by this place I flippantly said there’s a Dental office knowing full well she would take one look at it and say “No Way”.  After all, she is the ex-waitress I dated 40+ years ago that would not go into a restaurant if the windows were dirty.  Never mind if the food was good.  If the windows were dirty, the silverware, plates, food-prep etc. is one step from being shut down by the Health dept.

She said, Yes, let’s stop.  That’s when I knew she was hurting as (Many of you know she is a tough cookie).

Well inside, the air conditioning was cool, the receptionist, and Dentist were young.  They took her right in, diagnosed the problem, and we were on our way with an antibiotic.

It reminded me of the old saying “You cannot judge a book by the cover”

Some things we have learned about Dental procedures in Canada.
  • They will not accept Dental Insurance.
  • Rates are reasonable.  $50 for appt, $19 for x-rays
  • They do accept Charge cards
  • The dentist will only write prescriptions to be filled within their own province.  (Province is similar to our U.S. states).  Once you move to another province, you will have to see another Dentist to get a repeat prescription.

This antibiotic should hopefully carry us for another 3 weeks so we can complete our trip and get back home for some dental work.

It’s a Picasso

After close to 2 months on the road, Sandy advised that her hair coloring needed touched up and I must participate.  WHAT???

Then she advised that we had to do it a DAWN.  What?? What time is dawn.

So our “Top Secret” adventure began at 6:15 AM.  Yup that’s right I said 6:15 AM

Apparently ladies don’t want other ladies to know that they are dying there hair.  :-)

So at 6:15 AM.  Off we go to a room that is attached to the back of the shower rooms in the campground.

Of course, being the practical guy I am, I mistakenly asked the question “Why can’t we do it in the middle of the afternoon while you sit in a lawn chair just outside our Motorhome?  Seemed like a good, practical question to me?

Well after a litany of excuses I agreed to the secret mission at 6:15 AM

Well I painted and pulled, all of course while receiving instructions from the patient (SANDY) on:
-taking to big a clump of hair
-not using the pointed end of the comb to separate the hair into 1/2” wide clumps
-not using enough paint (probably called dye?? :-). )
-get to the bottom
-get to the top

Now come on guys.  I’ve painted, striped, and pin-striped cars.  Give me a break

Actually I would have preferred just to tape it off and spray it. :-).  OR cover her head and dip it. :-).  Now I’m thinking we can make a fortune by figuring out how to electro-deposition paint these ladies heads :-).  We could line them up 3’ apart on a bunny hill type of belt (you know the one’s at the ski slopes), electrically charge their hair, and run them through the spray booth.  The challenge is how to do it without electrocuting the car, I mean patient, I mean ladies, our wives :-).  I have to think a little more on this, patent pending :-)

Well I Declare.  It’s a Picasso.

Add this new skill to my resume.  I’m thinking of doing highlights next!!.  Can’t be much more difficult than pin-striping.

OK Ladies who wants to be my 1st Victim, I mean my 2nd Picasso?

7/29/2018. The Citadel.

I liked the Citadel, although I don’t think Sandy was into as much as I.  We spent 3 hours going through it.  It is located on top of the hill overlooking the harbor and downtown Halifax Nova Scotia.  They have college students in old time outfits acting the parts and giving tours.  They fire a canon at 12:00 noon and will let you fire an old Springfield rifle 3 times for $22.  I was impressed and would recommend this during your visit.

Here are the pictures:
For my Square D buddies.  Note the Safety Switch!!

7/28/2018 Downtown Halifax

The Board Walk was fun.  Restaurants, drunken lamp posts, pier 21 (where immigrants to Canada were processed), farmers market, and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

Although I know it is suppose to be a highlight, I was unimpressed with the Maritime museum.  I guess I expected more.

Here are the pictures of our walk along to boardwalk.
