What? We’ve been dreaming of traveling the country in retirement for as long as I can remember, with our travels with the girls for 5 years in our first motorhome in 2000 to the west, northeast and south solidifying our desire to do even more travel ‘on the road’ and see more of the country.
How? We have bought a home on wheels, Bill has posted a few photos already. It has been an intense, detailed experience of deciding which one, with more blog posts to come on that in the future. Bill is tired of staying in hotels so much for work. Our own bed and no packing/unpacking needed. We will be towing a vehicle for local side trips along the way.
Who? Bill and I. And we hope to meet up with friends as we travel around the country and reconnect with friends/relatives we haven’t see in a while, so once we list our path periodically, if you’re on our route and would like to meet up with us, please let us know! We’d love to get together.
Why? —Adventure
— Get out of our ‘9-5’ rut
— Our girls are on opposite ends of the country, Georgia and Oregon, and we don’t get to see them in person nearly enough. A flight once a year and squeezing it in around work schedules or holidays just left a lot to be desired in terms of family time. We’re hoping to get to see them more often in retirement and for longer periods of time, so a condo on wheels is the way to go.
— Unlimited destinations. We have been to all but 6 states in the US and want to get to all of them, for the first time and/or again. (Except Hawaii of course, which we wiped out this past year)
— Meet some great people who also travel for fun.
Where? — Our first trip will be 4 months through New York and Maine up into Canada to the Bay of Fundy, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec City, Montreal, and Thousand Islands NY.
— The national parks are high on our list.
— Wherever our girls may be.
— See the photo of our map of places we’ve been wanting to go. We’ve had this map up for more than a year and pinned places that are definite stopping points.
— We will be in the southeast during the late fall and winter.
— Heading west in spring 2019 to the mountains that are Sandy’s preferred destination.
When? We leave on our first adventure just 2 days after we are both retired! It’s been busy trying to get all the pieces together to be on the road so soon, and I had to negotiate those two days from Bill. He wanted to leave the day he left work. Retiring early while we still have our health to realize this dream was important to both of us. There will be no sitting still in retirement anytime soon.
